Anestesia

“Obrigado”.
Ela fechou a porta e deixou Paulo sozinho. Ele examinou o recinto.
Pensou no Pedro.
E as isolou.”
“Nunca escutei nada parecido.”
“Não me lembrarei dele? Como se fosse apagado da minha vida?”
“Exatamente.
Paulo permaneceu quieto.
“Dez, nove, oito, sete, seis…”
E finalmente descansou em paz.

Anesthesia

“Mr. Grey? You may come in and start getting ready for surgery. Just dress the gown and wait for the doctor. He will be here in five minutes to give you the anesthesia.”
“Thank you”.
She left Paul alone. He looked around. The room was white and cold. He took off his clothes and put the gown on. Then he sat down on the hospital bed and searched with his eyes for any object interesting enough to focus his mind on. But he did not succeed.
His mind flew back to Peter. He thought of him, the same way he has been doing in the past six months. Since they broke up, Paul can’t manage to get Peter off his head. Actually, Peter was more present to his everyday life now than when they were together. He was his company for breakfast and dinner. When Paul was showering, Peter watched him. When Paul walked the dog, Peter followed him. When Paul tried to work, Peter wanted to remind him of every aspect of their relationship that went wrong. And even when Paul slept, all he did was dream of Peter. Over and over again.
His friends told him that he needed more patience. That it was normal. And that it would soon be gone. But Paul knew that with him it was different. It was more than a regular heartbreak.
Paul suspected that he was suffering of a physical condition, so he went to the hospital some weeks before. The doctor, after listening carefully to all he had to say, came up with a diagnosis. Paul had a brain tumor. More specifically, all the memories from Peter had become a tumor inside Paul’s brain. And the tumor was located in the region where he storaged his immediate memory.
“So this is why I can’t stop thinking about Peter, Doctor?”
“Well, don’t tell anyone that I told you this, but… Precisely! All we need to do is to extract this tumor from your brain and you will be back to your everyday life.”
“And then I will be able to think of normal things? Like, complain about the bad quality of Sunday TV? Or laugh of the stupid jokes my friends make in a bar table?” asked Paul, hopefully.
“Indeed. I am sure that, once we get rid of this tumor, you will be back to your life. Peter-free.”
“So I need to do this surgery, Doctor,” concluded Paul, melancholically.
“I am happy you are so decided to be cured, young man. But don’t you want to know more about your condition and how are we going to help you?” asked the doctor.
“Oh, sure.”
“You see, when you and Peter broke up, you suffered intensely. Your body understood this as a trauma and tried to get rid of all the pain and suffering the fastest it could. So, as a defense mechanism, your brain gathered all the brain cells that contained your memories of Peter and kept it hidden in a specific region. You know, so it would be easier to handle them. It tried to isolate those memories.”
“Really?” asked Paul, “I’ve never heard of anything like this…”
“It is very rare,” explained the doctor, “but more common than you would imagine. There are several cases registered in the medical literature. I am sure even you already saw this happening. Let me give you an example… Have you ever met a couple that seemed perfectly in love, but after breaking up they just kept going on with their lives? As if they never loved each other?” Paul nodded, thinking about how Peter had asked someone else in marriage before meeting him, and that he was just fine when they met. “In those cases, their brain did the same procedure, but successfully. I mean, there was no tumor” clarified the doctor.
“Hmmm. And why do you think I have a tumor?”
“We can’t really tell, but… You seem to have a great amount of good memories… That is for sure. And everybody knows that those memories use more space than the bad ones. Another hypothesis would be that your brain understood that those were very relevant memories to you. They are what common people would call “a great love”. But what is specially interesting in your case is that your cells did not accept the isolation and started to reproduce uncontrollably. They left their area and multiplied incessantly. And they did it in the region where you keep your recent memories. And this is why Peter is present in every single thought you have.”
Paul stood there quiet. It was a lot to digest.
“Are you ok?” asked the doctor, a little worried.
“I am,” said Paul coldly, “So I believe surgery would be my best option, right?”
“Yes. But you must know that there are side effects, or better saying, consequences to this surgery. Do you remember that all your Peter memories are gathered in this tumor?”
“Yes…”
“This means that all the memories you have of him will be in the tumor.”
“I see… And?”
“The same tumor we will get rid of,” explained patiently the doctor.
“I don’t understand.”
“This means that, when we remove the tumor, you will lose all your memories related to Peter. The good and the bad ones. You will forget you ever met him.”
“I will not remember I met him? Like if you could literally erase him from my mind?”
“Exactly. We will remove him entirely from your life. But remember, all medical literature about this indicates that patients are ready to go back to their normal lives after the procedure.”
Paul became even more serious.
“I need to think, doctor. Can I call you back about this?”
“Take your time, son.”
Paul went home and tried to think about the decision. However, Peter was in all of his thoughts. Anything he tried to do came back to Peter. Every conversation with his friends came back to Peter. Every movie reminded him of Peter.
Since he could not think straight, he understood that the only viable option was to undertake the surgery. It was not his choice. But the necessary condition to go on with his life.
“May I come in?” asked the nurse from the other side of the door.
Paul stood still. Silently thinking of Peter.
She opened the door and asked, “Are you ready, Mr. Grey?”
“Yes.”
The doctor came in and started washing his hands. Paul laid down. As the nurse cleaned his arm with alcohol, Paul looked outside. The day was cloudy and the sky was white. Just like it was when he first met Peter three years ago. After the alcohol came the needle. It hurt a little.
“Please, Mr. Grey, count backwards from ten to one.”
“Ten, nine, eight, seven, six…”
And he finally rested.

Breakfast

It is a cold day. And as usually, it was hard for me to get up this morning. But now I am here, sitting alone in my kitchen. Enjoying the morning solitude. I have just prepared myself some fresh coffee and the smell fills the kitchen. It helps me to feel awake for one more day. You know, this is one of my favorite parts of coffee, the aroma. It is just that, as I hold my coffee mug with both my hands, and feel the heat, the smell fulfills me. It is the smell of the coffee break from my first job. The smell of my home kitchen, which is far away, in Brazil. Of "please mom, can't I sleep for just 5 more minutes?"
Before taking my first sip of coffee, I look inside the mug and there it is another of my favorite things of coffee: the color. I know I can almost sound ridiculous, but I will say it anyway. I'm fascinated by the blackness of coffee. It does not resemble at all the artificial color of a coca-cola, with its stressed bubles. No... With coffee it's different. He just lays there, quiet, releasing a discrete mist, like if he were just waiting for me. I stare at my cup of coffee, but he just stares back. He keeps looking back deeply into my eyes, challeging me. I can almost hear "are you gonna face another day?" I try to object, but he ignores me. He ignores and keeps staring at me. And like it usually happens in those imaginary eye battles, one part must lose. So I look away. I close my eyes pretending it will make me enjoy better the fragrance. But then, I realize that, instead of running away from the darkness, now I am inside it. It is not dark only inside my coffee mug, but everything around me becomes dark
I keep my eyes shut for a moment. The scent and the darkness play tricks with my mind. While the aroma takes me back to several familiar memories, with pleasant colors I already know, the darkness leads me to a world of colors I have never imagined before. Colors that are waiting for me in this unknown future. And then I catch myself feeling amazed by their beauty and hardness. They are the hidden colors inside my dark coffee. This journey lasts only for a moment, because I quickly open my eyes and find myself again alone in my kitchen. Outside my gray window a raven sings sadly in the Berliner sky.
And Berlin's melancholic sky reminds me of my third favorite part of coffee. I like how bitter it tastes. I have stopped adding suggar to my coffee for a while now. I must confess that I don't miss it anymore. Maybe I'm getting old, but with time I've learned that sweetness can make you sick. One cannot rely on a blue sky everyday. There isn't such a thing as a life of only happiness. And this is fine. What we understand as undesirable can also hold a hidden beauty. Bitter and sour also play an important part in life. And it would be unbearable to have an entire life where you only know the obvious tastes.
Only then I take my first sip of coffee, receiving this black bitter liquid, that carries in it memories, fears and amazing possibilities.
Good morning.

Apenas permanece me encarando.
O cheiro me puxa pras lembranças diversas. Cores conhecidas, familiares e agradáveis. Mas a negritude me mostra cores nunca antes vistas. Cores escondidas no desconhecido do negro.

Sorrindo, ofereceu a ele. E é claro que ele aceitou. Comeu e... E sentiu que o bolo era gostoso. Mas era doce. Doce demais. Agora ele precisava de água.
Se levantaram e continuaram seu passeio. O shopping não era tão interessante agora. As mesmas vitrines, mesmas marcas, mesmas pessoas.
Embarcou no primeiro degrau e começou a subir.
As mesmas vitrines, mesmas marcas, mesmas pessoas.

The Void

Some days nothing seems to work. You know when things just don't flow? This is what happened yesterday with me. I was leaving home a little late for my bus and on my way downstairs I felt something was missing. While walking I reached for my pocket and felt the empty space: I had forgotten the book I am reading on my subway rides. I hesitated for a moment before deciding to quickly go back and pick it up. When I finally arrived at the bus stop I had missed it by just a few seconds! And there you go… I knew I had messed up the feng shui of my day: missing that bus, led me to take the wrong train, which, by its turn, led me to the wrong train station.
So, there I was, standing at the wrong station, already super late for my class, when I decided I might as well skip it for the day.
I left the station and started wandering around, thinking about life, when I noticed I was still carrying the book that had caused this small revolution in my Monday morning’s plans. Isn’t it funny how almost every day small things can have an impact on our lives? If I hadn’t decided to go back and pick up that book, I would then be learning the Konjunktiv II. But instead I was now taking a walk.
On my way I spotted a gap in a row of buildings that looked like a square, or better: a garden. It was kind of funny, because it really looked like someone had taken an entire house out of the middle of those two buildings, as easily as someone cuts a piece of cake. And then, the neighborhood, without having anything better to do with the empty place, had decided to make a garden out of it. It reminded me of my hometown, Brasilia, which also has lots of empty spaces. In fact, there are so many empty spaces in Brasilia that I wondered if it could ever be covered with gardens. If that happened, there would be no prettier city. But anyway, I was not in Brasilia. And as far as I knew, I had found the prettiest garden in Berlin. I decided to sit there and enjoy the flowers, feel the sun, and watch the kids running around.
As I watched those kids, I tried to remember how many “books” I had come back to pick up in my life. And how many times those books had taken me to places I had never imagined going… I must confess I couldn’t remember a single one of them. I guess our limited capacity to keep memories makes us erase several of those unimportant decisions that make small revolutions in our everyday life.
One of the children came running towards my bench and hid behind it. And only then I realized those children weren’t randomly running. They were playing hide and seek. So I carefully pretended I didn’t know what was going on with this small fugitive and kept my Monday morning’s thoughts. I guess it is better not to remember everything. We do not have a vocation to be God and carry the weight of knowing everything. And this is good. I doubt those kids would be able to run so lightly if they had to carry all this weight.
This idea became even clearer to me just a few moments later, when I stood up and walked away from the garden. On my way out I could read a sign that explained how that empty space was actually a house destroyed by bombs during World War II. I tried to digest such information. But it was just Berlin being Berlin, and asking permission not to forget its past.
Yes, this is typical Berlin. She is always telling me that her empty spaces have meanings; that her sidewalks have small golden plaques; that her fountains have lists of names from people who were taken away before their time. Yes, this was only Berlin trying to teach my mind that it is not ok to forget everything; that some things should never be forgotten.
And there you go. As I kept walking through Berlin’s perfect sidewalks my mind travelled to Brasilia once more. If Berlin carries the weight of its own heavy past, Brasilia aims for the opposite. She constantly turns our heads to the sky. And everything is so light there that we keep forgetting our recent past which we just started to build. While in Berlin all those empty spaces are there to remind us of things that have been, but no longer are, in Brasilia empty spaces make us think of the future. Emptiness means potential and possibilities.  And all this lightness of having possibilities can also bring weight with it. The weight of the responsibility we have when we decide how to fill them.
And then I couldn’t help but smile, just like I always do when I suddenly see those improbable correlations.

And all became even more special when I realized that exactly one year ago I left the city with no past to the city with too much past. The only city that could add a little bit of heaviness to my twenty-five years of Brasília.

O poder do vazio

A causa disso tudo.
E quantas vezes eles já tinham me levado pra lugares inesperados...

Because we are still here, and we still love you.

- But... So now I have to say that I "loved" her, mom?
- That is right, sweetie - explained the mother, while trying to choose which was the best option for her son to wear at church that sunday: black or yellow shirt?
- But I still love grandma, mom... - said the boy, paying attention to a bird he could see through the window flying outside.
- I know, sweetheart - said the mother, finally deciding that her boy didn't have to wear black. Afterall, who would demmand a propper mourning from a six-year-old... - But now grandma is in heaven... And this is how we have to say now. Whenever someone goes to heaven, we don't say that we love the person. We say that we loved the person. Now take off this dirty shirt, so I can put this new one on you.
The boy obeyed his mother, but didn't stop asking.
- Do you love her, mom? I mean, do you love grandma?
This direct question hit her with all the weight of reality. Her mother was now dead.
- Of course I did, sweetie. I loved her.
- You don't love her anymore? - asked him, looking deeply in his mother's eyes, a bit confused, a bit sad.
- It's not this. It is just the way we say it... She is in heaven now, remember?
- But I am still here. And I feel the love here inside - explained him pointing to his chest.
The mother was touched by that... Actually his confusion made sense. She still loved her mother.
- I feel it too, sweetie. I guess you are right. I do love her.
As he heard his mom saying this, he smiled again! And he raised his arms to his mother, asking for a hug.
- So let's say goodye to grandma, mom! And let's tell her we love her!
And his mother hugged him, with tears rolling from her eyes.

To Dione. Because we are still here, and we still love you.

The Giant is Awake

Hello, my good friends,

Today I went to a protest here in Berlin to support my fellow brazilians who are changing the world back home. So, I believe it would be nice to talk to you about what is happening in my beloved country, Brazil. In this last week, we have seen several manifestations and protests there. They started because of a 20 cents raise in the tariff for public transportation in São Paulo. But that raise was just the last straw. We are tired. As a nation, we are tired. And now our population goes to the streets demanding for respect.
I am often telling my colleagues here in Germany how Brazil is an amazing country. I love it. I love its nature, its people, its culture. I love the food and the music. I specially love our diversity and I also have an optimistic view for our future. And talking about future, it is often said here that we are finally making it! That our economy is growing and that we are now soon becoming part of the so-called developed world! It is really super exciting! The problem is: it is not true. Or at least not so simple. Let me tell you some facts about my beloved Brazil.
In Brazil, we work for four months only to pay taxes. At least that is what 35% of taxes represent. Besides that, everything there is more expensive. If you live in Rio or São Paulo, your life will be way more expensive than here in Berlin or even New York.
If only we received back all the public services we are entitled to... All Brazilians are entitled to free public education and health care. But no. We have to face everyday how our money is not invested in schools or in hospitals. How a teacher makes not enough money to buy food while our senators are one of the most expensives in the world. We also have to deal with corruption, which steals around 80 billion Reais per year, or 40 billion US dollars.
We struggle with our own safety too. In big Brazilian cities you have a feeling of security that can be broken at any moment. I have never experienced myself any kind of violence. But I know people who have. And we watch the news and we know what to do to keep ourselves safe. So I watch out before walking to my car. I go to malls, not to open spaces. I don’t go out late at night. But even if I pay attention and only walk on the safe part of town, there is always one kind of violence that I cannot run away from. It happens when you are having lunch on a Sunday with your family and an eight-year-old wearing dirty clothes and no shoes comes inside the restaurant to ask for money, because he is hungry. And you loose your appetite. Quickly a waiter will lead the boy out of the restaurant and everything is like it was again. But those few seconds of contact between the two Brazils are enough to make us stop pretending everything is ok. You pay the bill and drive home. Thinking about it in your car.
This is Brazil. You can think about it while you use the air conditioner of you car. Your amazing car that costs three times the ones you see here in Europe. Or in Chile (or in Mexico!). You can think a lot about what happens in the country, because most likely you will be in a traffic jam. You see, we have a super Government that makes us buy more and more cars, but doesn’t build enough infrastructure for that. Having a car in some of the biggest cities of Brazil I extremely expensive! But we keep buying them, because you don't want to (or cannot) rely on the public transport. In Brazil, you have lousy, unpunctual, and also expensive public transportation. If you have a subway, you have only a few lines. If you have buses, they will be old, crowded and they will often break.
But that is not the worst about my country. What really made me ashamed of Brazil were two things:
To begin with, our Police is acting like a dictatorial force. They are repressing democratic peaceful movements. They are putting into jail the student leaders of the protests. Now we have political prisioners, just like we had during our dictatorship!
Besides that, our beloved free media was the worst actor of it. The way our media covered those protests... When we saw a movement of people who are tired of being exploited and wanted to express their own ideas, we had a media that turned its back to us. Almost the entirety of our major TV networks and newspapers quickly portrayed the protestors as outlaws. And maybe a few years ago that would have been a very efficient way to shape reality in a way that appraised them. But now it’s different. We have the internet, with twitter, instagram, facebook and youtube.
Remember of the video you saw in the beginning? It is super cool, right? With the special effects and all that... But these ones are even better. These are the videos of a true giant awakening. Be my guest to watch them:
